Yes, Im working on something. Not only that, but I've gotten a few new ideas. Yes, I appear to be all talk and no action. The next few days I'll be preparing for Christmas more than anything else. I'm the one in the family who gets the very dubious honor of hosting/cooking the Christmas dinner every year, AND my mother-in-law is arriving Wednesday, to stay till after Christmas. *sigh* ^^ I feel like I've cooked a million of 'em, so Im not too worried. My husband stresses over it worse than I do, but everything is usually fine. Except the year my oven caught fire.
But I didnt tell them, and nobody knew.

The closest equivalent to "friending" that you can get without paying for a subscription is "watching." When you go to someone's page there's a bar near the top (the one with their name on it). Towards the right there's a button that says "+deviantWATCH" -- that's the one you want. It'll notify you whenever that person updates their page (new images/journals/etc.).
